I was working at my desk today when one of my fossils caught my eye. I picked it up and thought that looks like a Tully Monster, but a quick check on the internet and I realized too small and not my geological time period, the Tullimonstrum belongs in the Pennsylvanian period. 300 million years a
Eurypterus is New York's state fossil. Placed in Subphylum Chelicerata, Eurypterids are likely a sister group of Class Arachnida, and are noted for sharing ontogenic (i.e., morphogenesis) traits with modern xiphosurans, the horseshoe crabs (see Carboniferous Horseshoe Crab Fossil Euproops rotundatus).

Note the large eyes and the division of the body into segments, named tergites. Eurypterida: Fossil Record The first eurypterid fossils were discovered in 1818 by S. L. Mitchell in Silurian rocks of New York state. Mitchell mistook the fossil for a catfish, and it was not until 1825 that eurypterids were recognized as a group of arthropods. Eurypterids fossils are known from all continents, and have such amazingly good preservation that their external structure is the best known of all extinct animals. Because of their long tails and the spine-like appendage at the tip, the eurypterids have been called sea-scorpions. Eurypterus is by far the most well-studied and well-known eurypterid and its fossil specimens probably represent more than 90% of all known eurypterid specimens.
The Giant Eurypterid Trackway: A Great Fossil Discovery on Display in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Figure 1. When museum patrons enter Carnegie Museum of Natural History’s Benedum Hall of Geology, they encounter a one-ton block of coarse sandstone with a series of bilateral footprints encased on the rock’s surface.

Eurypterid fossils have been recovered from every continent, though a vast majority of fossils are from fossil sites in North America and Europe due to the group primarily having lived in the waters around and within the ancient supercontinent of Euramerica.

Eurypterids, commonly known as Sea Scorpions are an extinct group of arthropods that are related to arachnids and include the largest known arthropods to have ever lived. Prevalent during the Silurian and Devonian, eurypterids were segmented aquatic arthropods, with compound eyes, and two club-like "arms."
